AstraZeneca has been given a green light to add a generic drug to its AstraZeneca franchise, in response to concerns raised by a study published in theNew England Journal of Medicinein December.
In the study, AstraZeneca found that patients who used a generic version of Lipitor (atorvastatin) for at least five years experienced an 8.4-fold greater risk of heart attack compared with patients who used a brand-name drug. A similar number of patients who used a generic drug used a brand-name drug and were not prescribed an identical or more expensive generic.
The study, by Dr. Joseph M. Czapik, M. D., of the Medical Policy Institute in the University of Washington in Seattle, found that patients who had been prescribed the generic drug Crestor (rosuvastatin) for at least five years were twice as likely to be diagnosed with a heart attack (7.3% vs 3.7%,p<.001) as patients who had been prescribed the brand-name drug Crestor (rosuvastatin) for at least three years. The overall risk of a heart attack was also significantly higher in patients who had been prescribed Crestor (25.8% vs 6.7%,<.001), but the difference was not statistically significant.
The data were presented at the American College of Cardiology Annual Meeting, held in June and June, 2007.
The study found that the risk of heart attack was about 3.5 times greater in patients who had been prescribed a generic drug and who were not prescribed the brand-name drug.
Crestor, the brand-name drug for rosuvastatin, has been a controversial drug for millions of patients and a major contributor to the high rate of heart attack. Crestor, a brand-name drug, was approved in the United States in 1999 and has been available since then as an inhaler for long-term use. Crestor is a generic, and the brand-name drug is a generic.
AstraZeneca is in the process of filing a lawsuit against two of its leading generic drug companies over alleged violations of AstraZeneca’s patent for the drug, which was approved for AstraZeneca in 2003. The lawsuit will include allegations that Crestor and its generic formulation are not safe for long-term use and that Crestor and its generic formulation are ineffective.
The lawsuit alleges that AstraZeneca has not received adequate warnings from manufacturers of Crestor and that Crestor and its generic formulation are not effective or safe for long-term use.
Crestor and its generic version are currently in class and have not been included in the class action lawsuit filed by AstraZeneca. In addition to the FDA’s warnings about the potential heart risks, Crestor’s manufacturer, Mylan, has also been accused of conspiring to withhold approval for generic rosuvastatin in the U. S. and worldwide. Mylan has received approval for the brand-name drug, Crestor, to market its generic rosuvastatin, which is marketed as Crestor (rosuvastatin).
AstraZeneca is appealing a decision by the U. Supreme Court to allow the company to add a generic drug to the AstraZeneca franchise in a move that would allow the company to add Crestor to the franchise in a timely manner. AstraZeneca has also been granted a stay on a class action lawsuit brought by AstraZeneca. The lawsuit was filed in Delaware Superior Court by AstraZeneca and was filed in the U. District Court for the District of Delaware. It seeks to prevent AstraZeneca from launching a generic rosuvastatin in the U.
This case is being filed by AstraZeneca with the U. Food and Drug Administration and is being brought by the plaintiffs. The U.

Read More What is crestorCrestor works by reducing a certain enzyme within the body that produces cholesterol. It belongs to a class of medications called statins.
Cholesterol is a form of lipid, a waxy substance that helps your body make cells, vitamins, and certain hormones. It is not inherently bad. Your liver produces an enzyme that synthesizes cholesterol to help with the above healthy functions. Additional cholesterol is introduced to the body through certain foods like meat, poultry, and dairy products.
There are two types of cholesterol: high-density lipoproteins (HDLs) and low-density lipoproteins (LDLs). LDLs carry cholesterol throughout the body, delivering cholesterol to cells that need it. HDLs carry excess LDLs back to the liver, where they are broken down and flushed from the body. While LDLs play a key role in cell health, they build up when the body has more cholesterol than the cells need. This buildup turns into plaque in the arteries (blood vessels). As plaque covers the artery walls, the blood vessels become narrow. This makes it harder for blood to flow through the body, which can lead to heart disease and heart failure.
Statins work by reducing the production of cholesterol in the liver, which lowers the overall cholesterol levels in the body. Not only do statins decrease levels of LDLs in the body, but they can also raise the level of HDLs in the body. In effect, they keep the body from making too much of the “bad” cholesterol that builds up in arteries while increasing the amount of “good” cholesterol that carries the “bad” out of the body. This dual action has been shown, along with diet and exercise, to lower overall cholesterol levels in patients effectively.
